Course Description: Ethics plays a significant role in effective counseling. This training will offer an in-depth review of the Code of Ethics for the Kentucky Board of Alcohol and Drug Counselors, and the ethical challenges emerging with the expansion of telehealth and the use of technology in counseling. The Ethics training is approved by the Kentucky Board of Alcohol and Drug Counselors for 6 CEUs.

Course Outline:
Section 1 will define what ethics is, and the use of ethical guidelines and regulations in making decisions
which impact the therapeutic relationship. We will also discuss the legal standards which have been set
to protect a client’s confidentiality. This will include a review of 42 CFR Part 2 and HIPAA. It will also
discuss when it is appropriate to share client information within the work setting.
Section 2 will address Legal concerns in counseling including supervision, financial arrangements and
how an Alcohol and Drug Counselor represents themselves. It will cover documentation, Boundaries
and burnout, and how these issues can affect client care.
Section 3 will cover how the Covid-19 Pandemic changed the way we work in a short period of time and
the challenges this has created. It will also discuss how the professional’s responsibilities are different
when using telehealth.
Section 4 will cover Social Media and its impacts on the Client/Professional relationship.

This training will be divided into four sections:
Section 1 will define what Harm Reduction is, and review the core principles of harm reduction as defined by SAMHSA. We will draw the distinction between the Harm Reduction approach and abstinence only models and discuss the history of harm reduction as a public health approach. This will include focusing on practical ways to reduce harm and the focus on person-centered care, empowerment and autonomy while stressing the person’s rights and dignity.
Section 2 will cover the impact of substance use and mental health, discussing physical and psychological dependence and the role of mental health in substance use disorder. We will revies the social impact of stigma and marginalization of people with mental health and substance use disorder and discuss strategies to increase access to healthcare and behavioral health services.
Section 3 will review key interventions for harm reduction including strategies to mitigate risk, education on substance testing kits (such as for fentanyl) and harm reduction strategies to address HIV, Hep-C and other transmittable diseases among high-risk populations.
Section 4 will address community and peer outreach and education, building community harm reduction programs and burnout/self-care prevention for workers.

Section 1 will define what Recovery Capital is and defines the 4 types of capital essential to recovery and the role of Recovery Ready Communities. It will also address the corresponding relationship between Recovery Capital and the Social Determ inants of Health.
Section 2 will discuss the Stages of Change and the Recovery Capital one accumulates throughout their recovery journey as well as identifying needs and resources as they progress through the Stages of Change. Finally, we will discuss what treatment providers and communities can do to develop opportunities for those in recovery to develop Recovery Capital.

Course Description:
This training will be divided into two sections.
Section 1 will define what supervision is and the competencies of supervision and the role of the supervisor in cultivating the role of peer support in clinical practice. It will also address Role Bleed and Role Strain in the delivery of Peer Support services and how the supervisor can monitor and mitigate these factors.
Section 2 will cover boundaries in the supervisory relationship as well as developing the peer’s boundaries with clients. Will discuss dilemma faced by the supervisor including but not limited to supervising a peer who is a former client It will also discuss how the professional’s responsibilities are different when using telehealth.

This 6 hour credit course presented by Tim Cesario and Geoff Wilson will highlight a number of trends and best practices for treating individuals with a substance use disorder. Changes over the last 20 years will be discussed along with current harm reduction techniques. Evidence based approaches for different levels of care will be discussed along with tailoring treatment to the individual needs of the client. 6 CEUS will be provided pending approval!
